TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Year of the Dog is coming to an end and the Year of the Pig is approaching. With holidays coming up next week there is plenty of time to check out some activities happenings around Taipei over the next week.
Here are just a few events happening in early February that might catch your interest.
Art and Music
A free art exhibit from young artist Wei Po-Jen (魏柏任) will be wrapping up over Friday and Saturday (Feb.1-2) from 11:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. The solo exhibition is entitled “Channel, Film and the Machine.” Using vintage objects like old tape recorders and film collections, the artist brings like to old memories and machines. The exhibition is being held at FreeS Art Space in Zhongshan District.
For fans of classic rock, on Saturday, Feb. 2, a Pink Floyd tribute band “In the Flesh” will be performing at James Joyce Irish Bar in Gongguan. The show, which also features psychedelic light displays, starts at 10:00 p.m.
The Popular Japanese music group Mr. Children will be performing two shows at the Taipei Arena this weekend, one on Friday, Feb. 1, and another on Sat. Feb. 2. Tickets are available at Tixcraft.
The collaborative art exhibition “4000 CE: Entering a New Era” is coming to a close, and Saturday, Feb. 2 will be the last day to view works by the groups of talented artists. To celebrate the successful exhibition, there will be a free farewell party from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Check out the event page for more info.
Starting in the new Lunar Year, Triangle club located at MAJI Square is planning to host a regular Karaoke night on Tuesdays. For those with no holiday gatherings to attend, consider trying out your KTV skills at MAJI Square to kick off the Year of the Pig with a bit of music and fun.
On Friday and Saturday next week, Feb. 8-9, kick off the Year of the Pig with a unique social event by joining the “Music, Movie, Market”party at the Lifang Old House (麗芳老樓) near Datong University. For two days, the three floor venue will offer different activities oneach floor including music and dance on floor one, movie screenings of floor two, and a handicraft market and lounge on the top floor.
New Year Market Events
A small Hippy Vegan Second Hand Market is taking place Saturday, Feb. 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The market is organized by Taiwan Vegan Frenzy and the Hip Pun Bakery in Zhongshan District. More info is available at the Facebook event page.

A contemporary Japanese printmaking exhibition and book fair is being held at the YaDian Art Book Store (亞典藝術書店) on Renai Rd. through the first weekend of February. The event is sponsored by modern management from Tokyo, and will provide an excellent opportunity to checkout a variety of fantastic modern Japanese style pop art.

Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3, Truffles Living in Da’an District will be hosting a Flea Market offering vintage home furnishings, with a large number of items from the 1960s through the 1980s. Check out the Facebook event page for more info.
The following weekend, Feb. 9-10, a Scandinavian home interior market is being hosted by Moi at Galagala Market on Jilin Rd. The market will offer high quality goods and snacks from northern Europe, along with a few seminars for those interested. Check out the Facebook event page for more info.
Regular Hangouts
If you want to put your English to use and enjoy an open forum to discuss different topics and hear presentations in English, check out the iEnglish Club English Gathering every Saturday.
If you're looking for a family friendly group to practice your English or your Chinese, consider checking out events with Language Exchange Taipei. They are having a free language exchange on Sunday afternoon at Lifehouse Taipei.
The LEIT Language Exchange group regularly hosts a huge number of activities. Check their events page for friendly hangouts and language exchange opportunities.
For those interested in French culture, and the French language, the Blue Rooster Bistro will begin screening a French film every Sunday evening in 2019 on large TV screens inside and outside the restaurant. Films start at 7:00 p.m.
For the beginning of 2019, Taiwan's Bobwundaye bar on Heping Rd. in the Da'an District will be hosting Wednesday Open Mic Nights for anyone who wants to share a little bit of their musical or artistic talent with an audience. The floor is open for performances beginning at 10:00 p.m.
Everyone’s favorite Irish bar in Gongguan near NTU, James Joyce, is also hosting live music every weekend.
If you have a love of Indian food and culture, then you can always stop by the Mayur Indian Kitchen location on Songjiang Road, where they have regular dance performances or Indian music for dining customers on Saturday nights.
For those new to Taipei, or those who have been here a while but still haven't seen all the city has to offer, consider taking a walking tour with "Like it Formosa." Tours happen regularly every week, with four different types of tours to choose from, depending on what you want to see.
