TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will meet United States Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback at an international forum in Taiwan Monday, according to media reports.

The Indo-Pacific dialogue on religious freedom is the first conference of its kind to be held outside the U.S., with the president expected to underline the common values of freedom and democracy both nations share, the Central News Agency reported. Tsai will address 80 representatives from more than 10 countries at the March 11 event.

Brownback, a former Republican governor of Kansas, holds the rank of a Cabinet minister, according to Taiwanese officials. His visit to Taiwan and his presence at the dialogue emphasized once again the positive nature of relations with the U.S. on the 40^th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and the first anniversary of the Taiwan Travel Act.

While Brownback was visiting Taiwan, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) was scheduled to hold a speech about “Taiwan: An Enduring Partner with the US in the Free and Open Indo-Pacific” at the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.

During his stay in Taiwan, Brownback reportedly also planned to meet Lee Ching-yu (李凈瑜), the wife of Lee Ming-che (李明哲), the human rights activist jailed in China for supposedly subversive activities. She has been waging an international campaign to exert pressure on Beijing to release him.
