TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Taoyuan City Councilor Wang Hao-yu (王浩宇) shared a video on Thursday (March 29) showing a U.S.-based Chinese scholar saying that if China unifies Taiwan, Taiwanese who have enjoyed democracy and freedom will be "killed even more."
During a speech given in Flushing in the New York borough of Queens, Chinese scholar Xin Haonian (辛灝年) said, "I tell everyone, the people of Taiwan have to struggle. You shouldn't make a mistake. What mistake? 'Ah, today the Communist Party has implemented the Three People's Principles,' 'Ah, today the Communist Party is very good,' 'high rise buildings are very good,' 'today Chinese people are all rich.' What you are seeing is superficial phenomena."
Xin went on to say, "If one day the Communist Party of China really ruled Taiwan and unified Taiwan, then its suppression on you would far exceed that of the people of China. Because you have enjoyed democracy and freedom, you would naturally resist, and the Communist Party would kill even more. For those who know democracy and freedom, if it does not kill you, who would it kill?"
On Thursday at 12:30 a.m., Wang posted the video on his Facebook page to alert Taiwanese people. In response, many Taiwanese netizens grimly agreed with Xin's assessment:
"What he said is the fact that the target of the PLA's killing will be the Kuomintang and civil servants who can't run away."
"There are many Taiwanese who think that the good times now equal peace."
"Just like the February 28 Incident back then."
"He was right. You're accustomed to freedom. Do you really want to climb over the wall for that kind of life?"
"Please don't let Taiwan fall during our generation."
