TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- The U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) announced this week it is adding 50 organizations, including 37 from China, to its “Unverified List” of entities that should be treated with caution.
The DoC made the announcement on Tuesday (April 9) and the companies or schools were listed according to Industry and Security Bureau on Federal Register rules. According to the Bureau, those listed are “ineligible to receive items subject to the Export Administration Regulation by means of a license exception.”
Kevin Wolf, a former assistant secretary of commerce for export administration told Reuters US suppliers are banned from using license exceptions to “sell products to repair goods that were sold previously” to those on the list.“ said Wolf. “But instead [they] will have to get a new license.”
Wolf said U.S. companies will now treat the listed organizations with caution. Although the listing is not an embargo, the complicated process those listed have to go through to do business with the U.S. will likely intimidate suppliers from dealing with these companies, Wolf added.
The 50 entities on the unverified list failed to provide sufficient information required for the DoC to do “end-use checks.” The list also includes six organizations in Hong Kong, four in the United Arab Emirates, two in Malaysia, and one in Indonesia.
The overarching goal of end-use checks is to enforce “controls on certain items” and to protect “U.S. national security” and the country’s interests, according to International Trade Advisors, an Australian company specializing in import-export controls.
