TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- The Taiwanese TV drama "The World Between Us" (我們與惡的距離) could soon be broadcast in North America and Europe in the near future, while a second season is in the works.
Due to the success of the drama, multimedia and live streaming company CatchPlay has revealed that it is in talks with HBO on showing the program in North America, cooperating with HBO Asia, and negotiating the copyright with Europe and other overseas markets, reported SETN. Since its debut on March 24, the social realist drama has won wide acclaim receiving a rating of 9.5 out of 10 on IMDB.
Ratings were sky-high when episodes 7 and 8 aired on Taiwanese TV on (Sunday) April 14. The highest rating within a minute climbed to 2.49, a record high. Audience discussions online reached a fever pitch as the final episodes, 9 and 10, aired on Sunday (April 21). On April 17, links to pirated versions of episodes 9 and 10 somehow already made their way to Weibo in China, sparking even more heated discussion about the drama.
The 10-part TV series examines the lives of all those who had survived a fictional mass shooting in a movie theater two years earlier. The drama follows the intertwining ties of the killer, the victims, the victims' families, the media, and the defense teams.
The producer of the program, Public Television Service (PTS), confirmed that it is already planning on running a second season of the show. PTS Program Manager Wu Pei-hua (於蓓華) said that script development has already started, but whether certain actors will return to the show will depend on the outcome of the new script, reported Mirror Media.
The show's screenwriter Lu Shih-yuan (呂蒔媛) said that the contract for the second season has not yet been signed, but plans are already in the works, according to the report. Lu said that the direction, roles, and plot will be different from the first season, but will still discuss "The World Between Us."
