TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – With the presidential and legislative elections out of the way, attention is turning toward local elections in late 2022, with defeated Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Lee Yen-hsiu (李彥秀) reportedly mentioned as a Taipei mayoral candidate.

Lee, 48, lost her re-election bid to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei City Councilor Kao Chia-yu (高嘉瑜), 39.

Responding to calls from her supporters to run for mayor, Lee said she would “not remain absent during important times of reform” and she would “not exclude any possibilities,” the news website newtalk reported Wednesday (Jan. 15).

Mainstream media have also frequently named President Chiang Kai-shek’s great-grandson, Wayne Chiang (蔣萬安), as a potential KMT candidate for mayor of the capital, especially since he was re-elected during last Saturday’s legislative elections.

The DPP challenger he defeated, Enoch Wu (吳怡農), has been tipped as a potential mayoral candidate for his party, while former New Power Party (NPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) could eventually run as a third-party candidate, newtalk reported.
