TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Senior executives from social media app TikTok’s Singapore headquarters visited Taiwan at the invitation of the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA), reports said Friday (March 29).
The short-form video app, owned by ByteDance, has often been the focus of suspicion for its Chinese ownership and for the alleged spread of disinformation. Taiwan has banned the app from government communication devices.
However, MODA invited representatives of the company to visit Taiwan and hold talks with several government departments, according to a CNA report. The focus of the meetings was on removing fraudulent and illegal content.
MODA helped the Ministry of Justice, the National Police Agency, and the Financial Supervisory Commission to establish direct lines of communication with TikTok. In the future, there will be no need for government departments to use the PR firm Jet-Go Consulting to contact the social media company, the report said.
There was no mention when the meetings took place, but they included discussions about the obligations of the website to take down fraudulent advertising and scams. Jet-Go reportedly sent letters to legislators insisting TikTok was not linked to China and would not send Taiwan-related data to the communist country.
Before February’s Lunar New Year holiday, executives from a TikTok department in Singapore reportedly visited MODA for a meeting about how to remove illegal content.
