TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Fog, thunderstorms, and heavy rain led to flight delays, diverted flights, and flight cancellations at airports across Taiwan on Sunday (March 31).
Taoyuan International Airport’s Flight Information Display began showing rescheduled flights starting at 2 p.m. due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, between 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., six flights were diverted to Kaohsiung International Airport, including flights on Batik Air, Shenzhen Airlines, EVA Air, Tiger Airways, Starlux, and ANA, per UDN.
Two flights were also diverted to China. An Air China flight was directed to Shanghai Pudong International Airport and a China Eastern Airlines flight was diverted to Wenzhou Longwan International Airport.
Meanwhile, those in Kinmen were unable to take off on Sunday due to heavy fog. Kinmen experiences heavy fog from March to May every year, which can affect air travel.
An electronic signboard in Kinmen Airport showed that more than 1,000 people were waiting to travel back to Taipei.
"I want to go back to Taiwan for tomb sweeping, but since it is foggy, I have to wait for a long time. We have been waiting since morning, and we are number 100 on the waiting list for a flight," said a delayed Kinmen passenger, per PTS.
Thirty-one flights between Taiwan proper and Kimmen were canceled, affecting 2,691 people. The Kinmen County Harbor Bureau also suspended maritime traffic on Sunday due to poor visibility.
If the fog does not lift ahead of the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Holiday (April 3–4), the county government has said it will enlist a ship to assist in travel back to Taiwan proper.
