TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Aviation Police Bureau (APB) on Monday (April 1) announced an Australian woman who posed as a tourist has been indicted for trying to smuggle heroin into Taiwan.
Chen Po-chuan (陳博全), captain of the Second Investigation Team for the bureau's Criminal Investigation Brigade, said the woman was arrested at Taoyuan Airport in December with 6.926 kg of heroin in her checked baggage, reported PTS News. The heroin had an estimated street value of more than NT$40 million (US$1.24 million).
"The suspect first flew from Australia to Malaysia, where she obtained a suitcase containing the drugs, and then took a flight from Malaysia to Taiwan," said Chen.
When stopped by authorities at the airport, the 60-year-old suspect claimed she was traveling for vacation. However, authorities found her checked baggage lacked sufficient clothing and daily necessities for such a trip and instead discovered heroin hidden inside her luggage.
The case was transferred to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office for violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act (毒品危害防制條例).
Chen said although APB had sent officers to a hotel the woman had booked, no one came to pick up the drugs, reported UDN. Intelligence has been provided to Taiwan's overseas missions to help track down those behind the smuggling operation, while investigations are ongoing domestically.
Chen warned the public that heroin is classified as a Category 1 illegal drug. Those involved in its production, transportation, or sale face either the death penalty or life imprisonment.
In cases of life imprisonment, a fine of up to NT$30 million may also be imposed.
