TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Video surfaced on Wednesday (April 3) showing an MRT carriage shaking dramatically and frightening passengers during the quake that rocked Taiwan.
At 7:58 a.m. a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck 25 km south-southeast of Hualien County Hall, with a shallow focal depth of 15.5 km, the Central Weather Administration said. Video shows dramatic scenes of collapsing structures, falling debris, and rocking MRT trains.
In one video, taken by a passenger onboard an elevated section of the Brown Line (Wenhu Line), a train bound for Liuzhangli Station can be seen shaking. At least one female passenger can be seen squatting and some scream.
Immediately after the temblor, Taipei Metro said all stations would suspend operations for about 40 to 60 minutes for safety inspections.
Taipei Metro said the operations control center for the Brown Line had issued instructions to shut down all platforms and halt all trains. All maintenance units were told to inspect equipment.
There were 51 trains on the line at the time, with 21 trains stopped between stations. All passengers were evacuated from the trains.
The Red Line (Tamsui-Xinyi Line) and Green Line (Songshan–Xindian) resumed running at 8:30 a.m., reported TVBS. All Taipei Metro lines had recommenced operations by 9:58 a.m.
