TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two Canadian hikers were rescued at 8 p.m. on Wednesday (April 3) after being trapped on Taroko Gorge’s Shakadang Trail following a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Hualien.
Park authorities said 14 people had been hiking on the Shakadang Trail when the earthquake struck. Twelve individuals made their way out to the trailhead, but two remaining hikers required a lengthy search and rescue, per CNA.
After finding the two Canadian hikers, search and rescue personnel applied first aid to minor injuries and scratches and then sent them to a local hospital. They were a 29-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman.

In related news, Taroko National Park said 12 people previously trapped on the Baiyang Trail were all safely rescued at 6 p.m. Unfortunately, three people who had been traveling on the Dekalun Trail were killed instantly by a rockfall.
The Kaohsiung City Fire Department said it received instructions from a search and rescue center at about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday (April 3) to conduct a search around Provincial Highway 8 around the Tunnel of Nine Turns. It dispatched nine vehicles: one medium-sized bus, 48 police officers, 11 firefighters, two doctors, one nurse, four search and rescue dogs, and professional rescue equipment.
