TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Family members of two Singaporeans missing in Taiwan after Wednesday's (April 3) earthquake were expected to arrive in the country on Saturday (April 6).
The missing couple are said to be married and were named Neo Siew Choo (Liang Xiu Zhu) and Sim Hwee Kok. They hold both Singaporean and Australian joint nationality.
Family members have released a photo of the couple that appeared in multiple media reports. Channel News Asia added the Singapore Trade Office is in touch with local authorities about the rescue plans.
“(MOFA) and the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei have been in contact with the next-of-kin and are rendering consular assistance. We continue to monitor the situation closely,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) was quoted as saying.
The pair reportedly took a bus to Taroko on Wednesday morning, which was expected to arrive at Tianxiang around 8 a.m. However, the couple got off before then, though where has not been determined.
The bus driver is also trapped in the Tianxiang area and communication is patchy, according to a SETN story.
Police said they have been in contact with friends and family members of the couple. In turn, they have released a photo of the couple and asked for any information about their whereabouts.
The foreign ministry said friends and family members of the missing couple would be assisted in their search when they arrive in Taiwan.
