TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A large factory fire broke out at the Nan Ya Plastics plant in New Taipei’s Taishan District on Sunday (April 7) morning.
The fire was reported at 2:00 a.m. and spread over the storage area, burning large amounts of polypropylene (PP) and other materials, reported CNA. The skies were filled along Zhongshan Expressway with thick, grey smoke between Linkou and Taishan districts, and Taoyuan’s Guishan District.
The fire was brought under control by about 3:30 a.m. It was kept from spreading beyond the facility, with no injuries reported.
The fire continued to burn for over 12 hours on Sunday, before it was extinguished around 2:20 p.m. The extremely high temperatures of the burning plastic meant that firefighters had to continuously douse the flame with water until the chemical fire’s fuel was exhausted, per UDN.
CNA reported that 100 tons of unfinished PP material and 200 tons of treated PP materials were destroyed in the blaze, which covered 2,857 square meters. The total damages of the fire are estimated at NT$14.3 million (US$445,000).
An investigation into the incident will be conducted by the company and the New Taipei Fire Department to determine the cause.
