TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Following a fire at one of its factories, Nan Ya Plastics will be hit with a NT$6 million (US$187,000) fine for allowing wastewater to flow into a nearby stream.
Fire at the plant was extinguished on Sunday (April 7) and no one was injured, per CNA. New Taipei City’s Environmental Health Bureau issued an air pollution warning due to the dense smoke.
Additionally, the bureau said that firefighters used firefighting foam in their operations. It ordered Nan Ya Plastics to properly dispose of the foam waste and ensure proper treatment of wastewater.
However, the bureau found on Monday (April) that the foam had been discharged into a nearby stream. Inspection personnel demanded that Nan Ya Plastics remove the foam.
As a safety measure, the bureau collected water samples for rapid screening to test water quality, finding no acute toxicity.
The bureau said Nan Ya Plastics did not include the treatment of firefighting waste foam in its emergency response measures, leading to the discharge of foam waste into local water bodies, which violates the Water Pollution Control Act. It has taken legal action and will fine the company up to NT$6 million.
