TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Four people vomited and experienced diarrhea after eating at a Beitou location of Bafang Dumping (八方雲集) on Sunday evening (April 7).
After being notified, Taipei’s Department of Health sent staff to inspect the kitchen and collect samples for laboratory inspection. The Bafang Dumpling case follows other food poisoning incidents at other Taipei area restaurant chains: Polam Kopitiam, Truewow, and Xiang La Spicy Hot Pot.
In speaking with local media, Lin Kuan-chen (林冠蓁), head of the Food and Drug Administration at the Taipei City Department of Health, said six people ate together at the location and had pan-fried dumplings and corn soup. Later that evening, four of them felt unwell and visited a hospital for medical treatment, per CNA.
Lin said a health inspection of the restaurant found several violations, such as unclean freezer shelves, freezer temperatures set too high, and paint peeling from the walls. The restaurant was given a deadline of Thursday (April 11) to make improvements.
Lin said if pathogenic bacteria are found in restaurant samples or they fail to pass a reinspection a fine between NT$60,000 to NT$200 million (US$1,870-US$6.2 million) could be imposed.
Bafang Dumpling said it would fully comply with directives given by health officials. The chain added that the case has yet to be classified as a solitary “family meal” or separate individual cases of food poisoning.
