TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A cat trapped for six days in a badly damaged building in Hualien after an earthquake was rescued on Tuesday (April 9).
The magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Hualien on April 3, causing the “Uranus Building” on Xuanyuan Road in Hualien City to tilt precariously. On Tuesday, halfway through demolition operations, an orange tabby was seen stuck between the burglar bars of a window on the seventh floor.
The cat is reportedly named "Orange" and is owned by a woman surnamed Yu (余), a resident on the eighth floor of the building. Yu was described as extremely emotional upon seeing her cat and demolition work was temporarily halted to rescue the feline.

At 4:48 p.m. the Hualien County Fire Department posted on its Facebook page that it had dispatched a ladder truck to bring the cat to safety. A staff member from the Animal and Plant Disease Control Center tranquilized the cat but was bitten by the pet during the process.
Firefighters then proceeded to cut the steel burglar bars and freed the feline. They placed the animal in a cat crate and transferred it to the platform basket.

Another cat suspected to be owned by a teacher surnamed Kang (康) was recently seen beneath an air conditioning unit in another window of the building.
However, rescue personnel could not find the cat when they attempted to reach it using the ladder truck later, indicating that it might have already left the area and remains unaccounted for.
