TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The lower house of parliament in the Netherlands approved a motion calling on the government to voice support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Saturday (April 20).
The motion received a yes vote from 147 of the 150 legislators at the European Union member state’s “Second Chamber,” according to a MOFA statement. The text called on the Dutch government to ask other EU member nations to support Taiwan’s efforts as well, and to openly speak up in favor of Taiwan at bodies like the World Health Organization (WHO).
Taiwan’s campaign to join global organizations is reasonable and corresponded to Dutch interests, the motion said. Apart from WHO, lawmakers also mentioned the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and Interpol.
In July 2023, the Dutch parliament passed a motion advocating closer cyber security cooperation between the two countries and support for cross-strait peace, per Radio Taiwan International (RTI). The April 18 vote in favor of the latest motion showed that the new Dutch parliament elected last November still stood by Taiwan, MOFA said.
Taiwan and the Netherlands share the values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. MOFA said Taiwan would continue to cooperate with countries holding similar views on issues like healthcare and sustainable development.
