TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A section of the Central Cross-Island Highway in Hualien was closed Tuesday (April 23) due to rockfalls following multiple earthquakes in the area.
Dozens of earthquakes in Hualien from Monday (April 22) to Tuesday caused the partial collapse of two empty buildings in Hualien. There were also rockfalls reported along the Central Cross-Island Highway in Hualien's Xiulin Township, per CNA.
The Eastern Region Branch Office of the Highway Bureau said that due to earthquakes in Hualien over the past two days, multiple sections along the Central Cross-Island Highway from the Tianxiang Recreation Area to Taroko National Park were found to have fallen rocks and debris during morning inspections.
A section of the highway from the 167.7-km to the 184.5-km mark was closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Subsequent decisions on whether to reopen the road will depend on conditions, with possible openings scheduled for 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
