TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Strong winds and rain across Taiwan have seen trees fall and caused at least two fatal injuries on Friday (April 26).
Around 12:30 p.m., a mail worker on a Chunghwa Post motorbike was struck by a falling tree in the mountains of Changhua County. A camphor tree fell as the 46-year-old man, surnamed Sun (孫), was driving past on Zhangnan Road in Fenyuan Township, reported LTN.
Sun was knocked unconscious and was bleeding profusely after the incident. Bystanders immediately reported the accident to the fire department.
Sun was rushed to a hospital in nearby Nantou County, but due to the severity of his injuries, he could not be revived. He was pronounced dead by doctors at 1:35 p.m.
Sun’s death was reported just hours after a 66-year-old man died after being struck by a falling tree while walking in Kaohsiung’s Chengcing Lake Scenic Area earlier on Friday.
Authorities warn that heavy rain over the past few days may have loosened the soil in some areas. The public is urged to exercise caution when traveling in heavily wooded or mountainous areas.
