TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5 earthquake rocked northeast Taiwan at 1:40 a.m. on Monday (April 29), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The CWA said its epicenter was 18.5 km north-northeast of Hualien County Hall, with a focal depth of 36 km. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 3 in Hualien County and Yilan County. An intensity level of 2 was recorded in Nantou County, Taichung, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Changhua County, and Yunlin County.
An intensity level of 1 was reported in New Taipei, Hsinchu, Taitung County, Chiayi County, Chiayi, Tainan, and Taipei.
No injuries or damage from the quake have been reported as of publication.
Aftershocks have continued in Hualien since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the area on April 3.
