TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Over half a dozen foreign passengers face a maximum fine of NT$7,500 (US$230) each for drinking alcohol and being disruptive on the Taipei MRT on Sunday (April 28).
On the last train of the Taipei MRT Red Line at 12:35 a.m., a group of foreigners were seen talking loudly and drinking beer, which is against MRT regulations, reported TVBS. Despite being told by others to quiet down, their behavior continued, and another passenger reportedly got involved in a verbal altercation with the group.
The incident was reported to Taipei Metro, which said it would locate the individuals to impose penalties. According to the Mass Rapid Transit Act (大眾捷運法), the fine for drinking alcohol on the MRT ranges between NT$1,500 and NT$7,500. Disruptive behavior affecting others can result in mandatory expulsion, it added.
In a video posted on Threads on Sunday, the foreigners are seen in the middle of the train carriage, drinking beer, chatting, and blocking the aisle by sitting sideways. One upset passenger recorded the incident.
He reportedly told some group members, “You are not allowed to eat or drink in the car, and it is inappropriate to talk loudly.” However, he said they did not listen, and another foreign passenger eventually attempted to intervene but became involved in a verbal altercation with the group.
Taipei Metro advised passengers to prevent disruptive behavior by reporting incidents through the intercoms located beside each door. Assistance can also be requested by dialing 1999, the Citizen Hotline, or using the Taipei Metro app on Apple or Google Play.
