TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese esports player Lin “ET” Chia-hung (林家弘) won the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) Japan King of Fighters XIV championship on Sunday (April 28), taking home 1 million yen (NT$200,000).
In the finals, ET faced off against Chinese player Zeng Zhuojun (曾卓君), better known as “Xiaohai,” per CNA. A finishing strike brought ET victory at 3-1, as he rose in excitement.
Having started playing fighting games at age 7, ET often spent time practicing at arcades since childhood, despite strong opposition from his family, reported CNA. This year, the esports player not only won the championship but also won recognition from his family.
“I’m finally no longer the runner-up,” ET said in an interview with CNA. “Since 2017, I haven't won many championships on the big stage, and I've been the runner-up several times, so I'm quite moved.”
Even though he is over 40 years old and has been competing in esports for many years, ET said he still believed that this championship holds great significance, proving that he can still make breakthroughs in Fighting King XV. This year marks his second title, per EVO.
“There are still events like EVO in the U.S. and next year’s world championship," the gamer said about future competitions.
As for the 1 million yen in prize money, ET joked that he would use it as travel expenses for future competitions. “For now, I'll just relax,” he said.
