TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police in central Taiwan arrested a man recorded attacking a woman inside a claw machine arcade in Taichung’s North District.
Footage of the attack was shared to a Facebook page under the title “Taichung is really rough,” reported UDN. The security camera footage shows a young man in an orange t-shirt brutally assaulting a woman in a white jacket.
The attack occurred in the early morning of Saturday (May 4) in Yizhong shopping district. The video shows the man and woman arguing in front of one of the claw machines.
On Sunday (May 5), Police were able to track down the man and the woman, reported UDN. The man, a 30-year-old surnamed Hsiao (蕭), is reportedly the owner of some of the claw machines, while the woman, a 41-year-old surnamed Hsu (許), alledgedly tried to steal a product inside one of Hsiao's machines.
The footage shows the assailant slap the victim’s glasses from her face, before punching her several times. Even after the woman crouches on the ground, Hsiao kicks her multiple times, before eventually dragging her into the street by her hair, out of the camera’s view.
The attack was not reported by the victim or any witnesses, so police were initially unaware of the identities of the suspect and victim. The owner of the arcade was not present at the time of the attack and only became aware after reviewing the security footage.
The day following the incident, the video was forwarded by an unknown intermediary to Heise Haomen Enterprise Facebook group. After the clip was uploaded, it was soon discovered by Taiwanese police patrolling social media.
After police tracked down the people involved and uncovered the details of the case, Hsiao was arrested and transferred to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office for assaulting and injuring the woman. The victim, Hsu, has reportedly been charged with theft.
