TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A northeast monsoon will bring cooler temperatures to north Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday (May 8-9), while stormy weather is forecasted to begin Monday (May 13).
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) said conditions will be muggy on Tuesday (May 7), but cooler temperatures are expected Wednesday night to Thursday morning. Low temperatures in the north and northeast, as well as Kinmen and Matsu, are expected to range from 19 to 20 C.
CWA meteorologist Wu Wan-hua (伍婉華) said the weather front that influenced Taiwan on Monday (May 6) has already moved to the eastern sea area, reported ETtoday. However, a cloud system from southern China is moving eastward.
Wu said on Tuesday (May 7), the weather in the east would see intermittent thunderstorms or heavy rain. In other areas, sunshine is expected, although afternoon showers may occur in western mountainous regions.
She said the northeast monsoon will strengthen on Wednesday and Thursday and combine with the cloud system from southern China. On Wednesday, Wu predicted increased cloud cover, with localized showers in the east.
There may be scattered showers in Greater Taipei, while other areas will experience mostly cloudy conditions. Heavier rain is expected in the mountainous regions of central and southern Taiwan.
On Thursday, as the cloud system from southern China moves away, moisture levels will decrease. Only sporadic showers are expected in the east.
Wu said the northeast monsoon will weaken on Friday and Saturday (May 10-11). Most areas will see sunshine, and only sporadic showers are expected in the east.
However, a new weather front on Sunday (May 12) to Monday will lead to occasional showers or thunderstorms in Matsu, Kinmen, Penghu, northern-central Taiwan, and the east.
Wu forecasted that temperatures on Tuesday will reach 33 C in central and southern Taiwan. An orange alert for high temperatures reaching 36 C has been issued for Pingtung County.
Wednesday night through Thursday morning, temperatures will drop by 2 to 3 C. Wu said temperatures will range from 19 to 20 C in Matsu, Kinmen, the north, and northeast regions, 20 to 21 C in central and eastern areas, and 23 to 24 C in Penghu and the south.
Wu said the northeast monsoon will weaken on Friday, and the next front will approach on Sunday, leading to unstable weather on Monday.
