TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The famed Jadeite Cabbage will be safe during its stay at an exhibition in the Czech Republic late next year, the National Palace Museum (NPM) said Saturday (May 11).
Concern about the fate of one of Taiwan’s most famous art treasures rose after news emerged that staff signed papers just 3 centimeters away from the artifact, while unauthorized cleaning staff also entered the storage room. The incident happened in March when the object was on loan to Tainan Art Museum.
The Jadeite Cabbage is due to be shown in the Czech Republic from September to December 2025 at an exhibition titled “100 Objects, 100 Stories: Treasures from the National Palace Museum,” the Liberty Times reported. The NPM said Saturday that a Czech law of immunity from seizure coming into force last month guaranteed that the artifacts would be safely returned to Taiwan after the show.
Preparations for the event with the Czech Republic’s National Museum started last year, initially by video conferencing. In July 2023, the NPM sent a team to inspect the location and discuss which items would travel to Prague.
A Czech delegation came to Taipei last month to talk about the contract, the decoration for the site, and the digital elements that will give visitors another view of the art. Final decisions about the exhibition will be taken during the next round of talks in June, the NPM said.
