TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) delivered a pre-recorded speech at the 2024 Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Tuesday (May 14), reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to democracy against Chinese threats.
According to a Presidential Office press release on Tuesday, the Alliance of Democracies Foundation (AOD) invited Tsai and President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to speak at the summit. Guests from other democracies like Ukraine also delivered speeches, per CNA.
In her speech, Tsai quoted the summit’s introduction, “This is not just a gathering, it’s a bold assertion to collectively defend democracy,” Tsai added.
“This year’s summit again includes timely topics such as transatlantic security, Kosovo’s defense of democracy, securing Ukraine’s military needs, and how democracies should defend Taiwan.
Tsai said despite China’s cyberattacks and military intrusions, Taiwan remains strong and determined. The president also mentioned Taiwan’s efforts to arm itself and improve relations with its allies to ensure safety and stability in the region.
In his remarks, Lai said that China’s coercion has only strengthened Taiwan’s resolve to remain democratic and free. “We refuse to submit to fear. We choose optimism and hope,” the president-elect said.
“Above all, we will continue to stand tall for democratic values around the world,” he said.
The 2024 Copenhagen Democracy Summit is to be held on May 14 and 15 at the Royal Danish Playhouse. A recording of day one can be viewed here.
