TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung high schooler Huang Chung-en (黃崇恩) will perform a blind piano solo at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) on June 7.
Huang, a third year at Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School (KSHS), was born prematurely at six months and five days, causing him to become completely blind, per UDN. From a young age, he could hear melodies and reproduce them on the piano.
Huang said that he hopes that he can have the purity of Mozart, be fearless of physical disabilities like Beethoven, and turn the darkness in his eyes into the sunshine of music. His piano playing, described as cascading like a waterfall, has a profound impact on listeners, as stated in his school’s press release.
With excellent auditory perception and musical sensibility, Huang can fully express music upon hearing it and also recognize family members, teachers, and friends from subtle dicferences in sound, CNA reported. Despite only studying at KSHS for three years, whenever a train passes by the school he can identify them, such as the Tze-Chiang Express and Chu-Kuang Express.
According to KSHS, Huang overcame obstacles in his studies, actively participated in school activities, and did well. In 2022, he was awarded the Presidential Education Award.
Huang said he enjoys playing the piano and feels a sense of accomplishment each time he completes a piece of music. Despite sacrificing much leisure time, he said he believes it is a worthwhile endeavor.
