TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Hong Kong esports personality Kurtis Lau Wai-kin (劉偉健) reported to prosecutors in Taichung City Thursday (May 16) to start four years and two months in prison for selling cannabis online.
The YouTuber, who is also known as Toyz, was detained in 2021 when he was suspected of having supplied vaping cartridges to a group of marijuana users. The Supreme Court rejected his final appeal against the prison sentence last month.
When he failed to show up for a live stream program on May 7, there was speculation started he might have fled the country. However, he later denied the rumors, though prosecutors asked police to tighten up the monitoring of his whereabouts, CNA reported.
Lau reported to Taichung District Prosecutors Office shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the company of his mother and friends, amid a crowd of journalists and live streamers. Following the required administrative procedures, a van took him from an underground parking space to Taichung Prison in the city’s Nantun District at 12:57 p.m., per UDN.
During the first two to three weeks, he will stay in a room with other prisoners, before being moved to a larger space housing eight or nine convicts. He will then be assigned work inside the facility, which is likely to involve electronic parts assembly, according to prison officials.
