TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Thousands gathered outside the Legislative Yuan building on Friday (May 17), shouting “no discussion, no democracy.”
The crowd gathered following a scuffle between the Kuomintang (KMT) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) over parliamentary reform bills that lasted the entire day. The scrap resulted in six lawmakers being sent to the hospital, per CNA.
Around 9 p.m., protesters gathered on Qingdao East Road outside the Legislative Yuan. They said that seeing the unreasonable behavior of the KMT and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) in the news prompted them to come, reported CNA.
Activist Lo Yi (羅宜) expressed deep sorrow over the footage showing DPP Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) being pulled off the podium by KMT legislators, causing him to fall headfirst. Lo also criticized the Legislative Yuan’s voting war, saying that bills were not read aloud and the agenda lacked transparency.
“This is not the Legislative Yuan we want,” Lo said.
DPP Legislator Lin Chun-hsien (林俊憲) said that although he had been watching live broadcasts and was aware of the situation outside the building, seeing so many people gather left him speechless with emotion, per Liberty Times.
DPP Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) said in a Facebook post that nearly 2,000 protesters showed up. The legislator's video showed a protester heckling the TPP's Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) as he gave an interview.
