TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Deputy Trade Representative Yang Jen-ni (楊珍妮) at the 2024 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Peru pushed for regulating economic regional integration to counter non-market economies engaging in unfair competition.
Yang said regulation could help address 21st-century trade challenges related to state-owned enterprises, labor, and the environment, per a Cabinet press release. It would also enable the proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific to promote trade and investment and enhance regional welfare, she said.
Yang said Taiwan hopes to work with CPTPP members to strengthen regional economic resilience and maintain economic prosperity and stability in Asia.
Yang engaged in sideline meetings with officials from CPTPP-member nations, reminding them that Taiwan can meet the high standards of the trade agreement. With strengths in ICT manufacturing and application, Taiwan can leverage digital technology to facilitate women, Indigenous peoples, and small and medium-sized enterprises to participate more easily in international trade.
Commenting on Taiwan’s APEC participation, the Cabinet said the country “demonstrated its firm commitment to pursuing high-standard economic and trade regulations and expressed its desire to continue enhancing cooperation with various countries in the global trade arena.”
The forum lasted from May 17 to 18 and was themed "Empowerment, Inclusion, Growth."
