TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) promised to continue strengthening Taiwan’s democracy on Sunday (May 19).
In his opening remarks at a presidential inauguration welcome reception, Lai said he would work with Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) “to work and build upon the solid foundation created by President Tsai over the past eight years.”
He also pledged to “engage with the world and make Taiwan stronger” and make Taiwan a key force in upholding regional stability.
Lai described Monday’s peaceful transfer of power as a “milestone for Taiwan’s democracy” that represents the “solid foundation laid by the people of Taiwan over decades.” He reflected on Taiwan’s transformation from an underdeveloped economic dictatorship to a democratic and diverse society with a prosperous economy.
He thanked Taiwan’s allies and partners for their long-term support, acknowledging their contribution to Taiwan’s democracy. “I also anticipate that Taiwan will continue to have all of your help in terms of maintaining regional peace, developing our economy, and international participation,” he said.
In his presidential address, Lai is expected to mention cross-strait relations, Taiwan’s international participation, and solidarity against Chinese threats, and call on Taiwanese to be more self-confident as Taiwan’s global status rises.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said there were 51 delegations with 508 foreign guests attending the presidential inauguration ceremony and related activities. Among Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, there were eight delegations led by heads of state, one delegation led by a vice head of state, one delegation led by a foreign minister, and two special envoy delegations, including the customary envoy appointed by the Holy See.
