TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police in New Taipei City’s Xinzhuang District caught a dangerous fugitive Wednesday (May 22) evening four days after he had escaped from a psychiatric hospital in Keelung City.
Chien Yu-hung (簡郁紘), 39, was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to three years in prison preceded by five years at a hospital. His escape on Sunday (May 19) led to schools in several parts of north Taiwan closing their doors to outsiders out of fear he might try and hide on their grounds.
Police tracked his movements over the past few days, finding he had traveled by bus and mass rapid transit from Keelung to Taipei’s bustling Ximending area. One theory in the media had him traveling home to New Taipei City’s Linkou District for a change of clothes, as surveillance camera footage showed he had been wearing the same plaid shirt since his escape.
Chien’s last known location was in Banqiao District in New Taipei, where he left an MRT train at Xinpu Station. He then reportedly boarded a bus for Xinzhuang.
Police found him at a building in the district, where they arrested him at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, per CNA. Since he had run out of money, he had applied for a temporary job at the building, the Liberty Times reported. However, a person at the site recognized him and called the police.
