TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Rain brought 74.84 million tons of water to reservoirs across Taiwan with the passing of the recent weather front.
According to the Water Resources Agency (WRA), northern reservoirs gained 11.3 million tons of water, with Shimen Reservoir receiving the most at 3.6 million tons. Meanwhile, southern reservoirs collected 24.5 million tons of water.
Zengwen and Wushantou reservoirs in the south have collectively gained 19 million tons, making them the biggest beneficiaries, per CNA. Zengwen Reservoir surpassed the 100-millimeter mark for the first time in 260 days, per Liberty Times.
The remaining water will gradually flow into the reservoirs over the next few days, reported CNA. The WRA said this period coincides with water demand for the first rice crop. The recent rainfall will reduce the need for reservoirs to supply water for agriculture and public use and increase storage, the agency added.
In the north, Xinshan Reservoir's water storage rate is 96.8%, Feitsui Reservoir is 68.5%, Shimen Reservoir is 33.1%, and Baoshan Second Reservoir is 58.4%. In central Taiwan, reservoirs such as Liyutan, Techi, and Sun Moon Lake have water storage rates of 72.3%, 82.1%, and 97.9% respectively.
In the south, Wushantou Reservoir's water storage rate is 77.7%, Zengwen Reservoir is 29.7%, and Nanhua Reservoir is 26.9%.
