TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The New York State Legislature passed a pro-Taiwan bill on Wednesday (May 29), emphasizing the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances are the foundation of U.S.-Taiwan relations.
New York State Senator Luis Sepulveda and Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly Phil Ramos sponsored the resolution, per CNA. Taiwan officials including Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York Deputy Director Chang Li-hsien (張麗賢) and Beigang Chaotian Temple Chair Tsai Yung-te (蔡咏鍀) were invited to witness the passing of the resolutions and attend the following tea party.
The resolution said the U.S. and Taiwan share the same vision, with freedom and democracy being the foundation of peace, prosperity, and progress, reported CNA. International summits such as the Quad, G7, and NATO have repeatedly emphasized that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are crucial for maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region, it said.
The resolution mentioned the first agreements under the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, signed in June, which deepen economic partnerships and promote innovation.
In a speech, Chang said as the Taiwan Relations Act enters its 45th year, Taiwan will continue to be a reliable partner for the U.S. in maintaining regional peace and stability. She thanked the New York State Legislature for passing the resolution, echoing the solid pro-Taiwan stance of the federal government.
Chang praised the efforts of Taiwanese community leaders for their community service and contributions to fostering relations between New York and Taiwan.
