TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a heavy rain alert for 11 counties and cities in central and western Taiwan on Sunday (June 2).
A level 2 alert was issued at 9 a.m. on Sunday, as plum rains arrived along with the passing of Tropical Storm Maliksi. County and city governments have been reminded to activate pumping stations and implement traffic control in areas prone to flooding.
The forecast called for showers or thunderstorms in central and western Taiwan, with a chance of heavy or potentially torrential rain.
The heavy rainfall has helped fill local reservoirs short of water supply. Each reservoir has been alerted to flood control measures and high turbidity, per CNA.
The Water Resources Agency reminded the public not to enter areas such as mountains, rivers, and beaches unless necessary during periods of heavy rain. Motorists are also encouraged to monitor traffic conditions and flooding before venturing out.
Households are encouraged to clean balcony drains and drainage ditches near homes to reduce flooding risks. Weather information can be obtained through real-time disaster prevention on the internet.
WeatherRisk meteorologist Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) said a low-pressure system associated with Tropical Storm Maliksi will pass through northern Taiwan on Sunday. Strong southwesterly winds in the south will increase the probability of heavy rain in the western half of Taiwan, per UDN.
