TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A group of junior high school students were arrested in Taichung on Saturday (June 1) for beating a fellow student in an altercation that was captured on video.
A group of nine teenagers, including two people who are legally adults, were arrested on Saturday night in Taichung’s Beitun District after they were recorded hitting and kicking a 13-year-old boy. Among those who were arrested, one of the adults was a female who recorded the attack and shared the footage online in a chat group, reported TVBS.
The attack occurred at a temple on Taiping Road around 1 a.m. on Saturday. After the attack, the victim went home and told his grandmother, who contacted the police around 4 a.m.
The conflict reportedly began because the victim was carrying around NT$35,000 (US$1,075) in cash. The others were angry when he refused to lend them money or treat them to an evening at KTV, reported UDN.
One of the attackers was reportedly aware that the victim was often given large amounts of spending money by his grandmother. Surrounded by a group of his friends, the attacker attempted to extort the victim for money.
When the victim refused, the group began punching and kicking him. The incident was recorded by CCTV cameras at the temple, as well as by the girl who shared the incriminating video online with friends.
The victim reported that in addition to the NT$35,000, his phone was also stolen. After the police arrested the group of teenagers, they were unable to locate the phone or money that was allegedly stolen.
In a public statement on the incident, Taichung Police said that those who took part in the attack, as well as those who shouted and cheered without intervening, will be charged in the Taichung District Court’s Juvenile Court division. The adult who filmed and distributed the video of the incident will also face charges and may be fined up to NT$600,000 for violating the Protection of Children and Youths Welfare and Rights Act, per TVBS.
