TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China is undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) said at a press conference Tuesday (June 4) morning.
Responding to China’s Minister of Defense Admiral Dong Jun’s (董軍) remark on June 2 that the possibility of a peaceful resolution with Taiwan is being “eroded” by Taiwan “separatists” and “external forces.” Hsiao said such provocative rhetoric is not conducive to cross-strait relations and is not supported by the international community.
At the annual Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore, Dong accused the U.S. and Taiwan of pursuing independence. He reiterated that China was prepared to use force to take over Taiwan.
Hsiao acknowledged and appreciated the participants of the Shangri-La Dialogue for their concern regarding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwanese government will continue to seek participation in international dialogue forums and mechanisms, including the Shangri-la Dialogue, he said.
The deputy spokesperson said Taiwan is committed to upholding peace in the Taiwan Strait. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has repeatedly expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with China, Hsiao said.
He called on China to join Taiwan in maintaining peace and improving cross-strait relations.
