TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday (June 5) congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his election win.
Although his Bharatiya Janata Party lost its majority in parliament, Modi gained enough support from regional allies to declare victory in the country's national elections on Tuesday evening (June 4), per Reuters. This garnered him a historic third term as prime minister of India.
MOFA issued a statement extending its congratulations to the Indian government and its people on the completion of the election. The ministry described Taiwan and India as “key members” of the Indo-Pacific region and noted that ties between the two countries have “steadily advanced.”
The ministry emphasized the increasingly close exchanges in terms of the economy, trade, semiconductor technology, education, and culture. MOFA stressed India is “an important partner” for Taiwan's digital New Southbound initiative.
The ministry said Taiwan looks forward to working with India’s new government based on “existing friendly ties” to continue cooperation in industry chains and other domains to “jointly contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”
At 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Lai uploaded a post to X offering his “sincere congratulations” to Modi for his election victory. He added his administration looks forward to “enhancing the fast-growing Taiwan-India partnership.”
Areas he highlighted for cooperation included trade and technology and to "contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
