TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan thanked the U.S. for approving its latest weapons package on Thursday (June 6).
Presidential Office Spokesperson Lii Wen (李問) said President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) appreciates the U.S. government's enhancement of close defense cooperation with Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, per a Presidential Office press release.
The U.S. government formally notified Congress of its intent to sell standard and non-standard spare and repair parts for its F-16s. The potential sale is valued at US$300 million (NT$9.68 billion).
Lii pointed out that the sale was the 14th under the Biden administration and demonstrated the U.S. government's commitment to peace in the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan’s security. The spare parts will help maintain the readiness and replenishment of Taiwan's aircraft, he said.
The spokesperson said Taiwan will continue enhancing its self-defense capabilities and defend its democratic way of life. It will also deepen partnerships with like-minded countries to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region, he added.
