TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The India Taipei Association (ITA) organized a large-scale yoga practice session at Taoyuan Sunshine Theater on June 8 to mark the 10th International Yoga Day.
Hundreds of locals and Indian expatriates came to practice yoga together with the guidance of professional yoga instructors, according to ITA. The event began with a prayer dance by an Indian yoga expert.
This year’s event highlighted how yoga can be incorporated into one’s daily schedule. The event shared yoga routines like “Chair yoga” which can be done while working in the office or dance yoga.
ITA Director General Manharsinh Yadav said India and Taiwan share common values and cultures, with yoga being a significant part. Yoga is a precious asset for all humanity, transcending language and geographical barriers, and is widely practiced and appreciated globally, Yadav said.
Yoga helps control the senses, thoughts, and life, he said. In India, yoga is considered a way of life, with nearly everyone incorporating it into their daily routines to maintain physical and mental health and inner balance.
Yadav encouraged the Taiwanese to visit India to experience yoga firsthand. India has renowned yoga centers that offer comprehensive courses amid natural surroundings, he said.
Places like Rishikesh and Kerala are ideal choices for Taiwanese seeking to learn more about yoga, whose birthplace is India, according to ITA.
In 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the summer solstice as International Yoga Day. With the approval of the U.N., June 21 was declared International Day of Yoga and has been celebrated annually.
