TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Representative to Poland Sharon Wu (吳尚年) met with Poznan Mayor Jacek Jaskowiak to gain a better understanding of local integration plans for new Ukrainian residents on June 5.
Wu said that after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the Taipei Representative Office in Poland collaborated with the Poznan city government to immediately assist in resettling Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, per CNA. This helped new Ukrainian residents integrate into local life, she said.
Jaskowiak thanked Taiwan for its donations last year, which enabled the city to promote cultural activities, language courses, and job training programs helping Ukrainian immigrants integrate into the community and adapt to the challenges of living in a foreign country. In December, Taiwan donated US$1 million (NT$31.29 million) for a fund to help Ukraine in cooperation with the 12-city Union of Polish Metropolises.
The mayor also took to Facebook to highlight Taiwan’s contributions to humanitarian aid for Ukrainian immigrants in Poznan. He said in the past two years, Taiwan has donated US$575,000 to the city to support Ukrainians and added, “I sincerely thank the nation and the Taiwanese government for the assistance provided.”
The Taipei Representative Office in Poland said that in May 2022, it provided funds to the city for food, resettlement assistance, schooling, and employment help for Ukrainian women refugees.
Taiwan, Poland, and Ukraine are all peace-loving partners that share the values of freedom and democracy, the office said. In the future, Taiwan will continue to work with various sectors in Poland to provide necessary assistance to new Ukrainian residents, it said.
