TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Czech Senate Deputy Speaker Jiri Drahos praised close bilateral ties with Taiwan at a luncheon hosted by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) on Tuesday (June 11).
Bilateral relations are founded on the shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights, Drahos said, according to the Presidential Office. There is also a mutual respect and willingness to share knowledge and promote democratic values, he said.
He emphasized that true friendship is demonstrated through actions, not just words. During the COVID-19 pandemic and other natural disasters, the two countries have helped each other, he said.
Drahos said the Czech Republic supports Taiwan's participation in international organizations, pointing out the recent resolution passed in the Senate recently backing Taiwan's inclusion.
The deputy speaker hoped to continue science, technology, and cultural exchanges.
Hsiao thanked the Czech government for donating aid to reconstruction efforts following the April earthquake in Hualien. She also mentioned that Taiwan is building social resilience and anticipates further collaboration with the Czech Republic to strengthen supply chains.
The vice president said she looked forward to advancing bilateral relations.
Drahos arrived in Taiwan on Monday (June 10) to promote Taiwan-Czech chip cooperation and exchange views on economy and trade, science and technology, education, and culture.
