TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Claims that President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) badmouthed his predecessor Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) lack evidence, fact checkers have determined.
The audio was posted on X after Lai’s inauguration on May 20, according to an RFA (Radio Free Asia) report. It talks about a supposed “long-standing break” between Lai and Tsai.
The 93 second tape was shared by a user known as “Guyan Muchan,” who was described as having been the source of misinformation on multiple occasions in the past.
Asia Fact Check Lab (AFCL) said the purported leaked audio file was likely generated by artificial intelligence. It used AI detection tools to come to its conclusion, adding three of four sections were 90% likely to have been AI generated.
National Cheng Kung University Associate Professor Hsu Chih-chung (許志仲) was quoted as saying the voice on the audio was a fairly poor simulacrum of the president. The deep learning expert described the recording as low quality.
Separately the Presidential Office was quoted saying a National Security Bureau investigation had also determined the audio was fake.
