TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A woman from the Philippines drowned after she fell near a waterfall in Pingtung County, reports said Wednesday (June 12).
Three migrant workers arrived in Majia Township’s Paiwan Village in the morning, per Liberty Times. Shortly after noon Wednesday, they called local emergency services after one of them, a 34-year-old woman, fell into the water.
The Pingtung County Fire Service sent 12 rescue workers in five vehicles to the scene, close to the Shalawan Waterfall. They arrived at 3:17 p.m. and located the woman at 4:36 p.m. using drones.
When they pulled her ashore at 5:43 p.m., she was already dead, the fire service said. Pingtung County has experienced heavy rain over the past few days, leading to swollen rivers and rapid currents. Three people reportedly drowned near the same waterfall in April 2016.
The Shalawan Waterfall is regarded as a sacred site by the Indigenous Paiwan tribe, who do not frequently visit the area. In addition, the three migrant workers had not applied for the necessary pass to enter the area, UDN reported.
