TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 47-year-old hiker from Kaohsiung, surnamed Huang (黃), died after descending from Yushan's main peak on Monday (June 17), slipping and falling 300 meters down a steep slope.
The Nantou County Fire Department said it received an emergency distress call on Monday from an 11-person hiking team that entered Yushan through the Tataka (塔塔加) Trailhead. The hiking group said one member required assistance, per CNA.
Huang was approximately 150 meters below Yushan's main peak when he disappeared out of sight of the hiking group. Members of his hiking team soon called out to him to determine if he was alive or injured.
After receiving no response, the hiking team reported the incident via the 119 hotline. The fire department dispatched five rescuers, with the Yushan National Park Management Headquarters contributing another four rescuers.
Due to the steepness of the slope and the difficult terrain, rescuers had difficulty locating and transporting the body which required advanced rescue equipment.
Rescuers decided to spend the night at nearby Paiyun Lodge on Monday evening (June 17) before undertaking the rescue the following morning. Later, they would set ropes for the steep descent down to the Huang.
When Huang was discovered, he had no vital signs as his body was placed on a SKED stretcher. A helicopter from the National Airborne Air Service Corps transported his body to Nantou County’s Xinyi Township, where his body was turned over to family members and the police.
