TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei ranked 46th happiest city out of 250 cities, according to the London-based Institute of Quality of Life’s Happy City Index.
According to the institute’s evaluation system, the first 37 cities receive a “gold” score and do not have individual rankings, per CNA. Cities ranked 38-100 receive a “silver” score while cities 101-250 receive a “bronze” score.
Europe took center stage with 30 cities scoring gold, including Berlin and Zurich, while the U.S. only scored one gold with Minneapolis. Osaka, Singapore, and Seoul scored gold.
Meanwhile, Kaohsiung placed 64th and Taoyuan was 88th, both scoring silver.
“We believe it is not possible to fairly well identify a single city that should be considered the best in terms of ensuring the happiness of its inhabitants,” the institute explained. “This is due to many factors such as different classification of cities in the world, the scale of their impact, the number of inhabitants, the availability of resources, etc.”
Researchers said they evaluated major areas that have a direct impact on happiness, such as governance and the economy. These areas are divided into 24 sub-categories including educational system, anti-pollution, and entrepreneurship.
