TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled east Taiwan at 10:27 p.m. on Sunday (June 23), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County and Nantou County. An intensity level of 3 was recorded in Yilan County, Taitung County, Taichung, Yulin County, and Chiayi County.
An intensity level of 2 was reported in Miaoli County, Changhua County, Hsinchu County, Chiayi, Tainan, and New Taipei. An intensity level of 1 was measured in Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, Taipei, Hsinchu, Pingtung County, and Penghu County.
The CWA said its epicenter was 18.3 km south of Hualien County Hall, with a focal depth of 17 km.
