TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Government announced Thursday (June 27) it aims to facilitate AI research and development at Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City (SSGESC), transforming it into an AI ecosystem.
According to a Tainan City Government press release, the city will partner with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and SSGESC to create an AI and science hub.
The science city is home to NYCU’s College of Artificial Intelligence, dubbed “AI College,” per CNA. Its goal is to cultivate talent with theoretical and practical AI skills in healthcare, green energy, and drones.
NYCU College of Artificial Intelligence Dean Hwang Ren-hung (黃仁竑) said the school’s Pervasive Artificial Intelligence Research Labs (PAIR), established in 2018, is helping integrate AI into everyday applications. The center has attracted investment from Nvidia and AUO Corporation, the dean added.
Tainan City Government Economic Development Bureau Director-General Lin Jung-chuan (林榮川) praised the school's many achievements, such as assisting drones to identify small objects and employing robots in healthcare.
Following Premier Cho Jung-tai’s (卓榮泰) visit to the science city on June 15, SSGESC said it will follow the central government’s AI policies, fulfilling President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) vision of an “AI Island.”
Located near High Speed Rail Tainan Station, SSGESC was established on Dec. 16, 2019.
