TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Visitors at a supermarket in Singapore on Friday (June 28) watched Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) making mango ice cream.
Mangoes from the southern Taiwan city have become so popular that supermarkets in Singapore ordered six times more mangoes than during a similar promotional event last year, the mayor said. The orders now also include three different varieties of the juicy orange fruit, per CNA.
Huang emphasized the importance of quality control at the source. Residents of Singapore enjoyed high incomes so they also demand high quality, Huang added.
Mangoes from Taiwan are not only available at CS Fresh and Giant outlets, but can also be ordered online from RedMart and Shopee, the Tainan City Government said. In addition to fresh fruit, special gift boxes were also available.
Officials expressed the hope that the successful export of mangoes to Singapore would also encourage the consumption of other Taiwanese fruit varieties, providing an extra source of income for farmers.
Taiwan has been exporting mangoes to Japan and South Korea. It has also conducted talks with the United States which could result in exports to the country starting within two years.
