TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Google and the multinational investment company BlackRock are partnering to fund the construction of a massive solar energy pipeline in Taiwan through the solar power company New Green Power.
According to the press release, the project is intended to help Taiwan meet its energy transition goals for the 21st century while also ensuring adequate power for Google’s cloud servers and data centers. The solar power project is expected to supply approximately 1 gigawatt worth of electricity per year.
Google stated in its press release that it expects to procure “up to 300 megawatts of solar energy from this pipeline through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and the associated energy attribute certificates (Taiwan Renewable Energy Certificates, or T-RECs) to help meet electricity demand from our data center campus, cloud region, and office operations in Taiwan.”
Carbon Credits, a leading site reporting on business activity related to green technology and carbon prices, reports that New Green Power is a leading solar power company in Taiwan that has already built and managed domestic projects producing over 500 megawatts of electricity. New Green Power is wholly owned through BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure business, per Carbon Credits.
The new agreement is touted as an important milestone for Google’s net-zero pledge. Google has previously worked with New Green Power to develop a solar energy farm in Tainan, whose output helps to power a data center located in Changhua County.
